Looking beyond new year resolutions

A new year will often trigger the desire for a fresh start. While many of us quickly forget our New Year’s resolutions, some people actually set goals and start working towards achieving them.

If the idea of working in the same job for another year fills you with dread, it might be worthwhile investigating other opportunities.

But before you begin the search, start thinking about your ideal job. What does it look like? What will you be doing? How will you get there?

Progressing your career

Ideal jobs and career progression don’t just happen by accident. Sure there’s always an element of good fortune – like being in the right place at the right time. But successful career progression is planned to ensure you have the skills, education and experience to take you where you want to go.

At times, this might mean taking a sideways step because you need to expand your skillset. At other times, it could mean staying in a role you don’t love because it provides the experience you’ll need to get you where you want to go.

By keeping your eye on positions as they become available, you’ll be able to determine the skillset employers require to fulfil your ideal role. Then you can keep an eye out for opportunities to acquire any skills or experience you’re missing.
