What to Do If Hiring Feels Slow

Hiring didn’t used to feel like this.
We’re seeing roles that would’ve closed in 3–4 weeks now dragging out to 7–8.
Sometimes longer.
Same role.
Same salary.
Same market.
Just… slower.
And the default explanation is always the same.
“Candidates are harder to find.”
“Good people just aren’t out there right now.”
From what we’re seeing, that’s not really what’s going on.
⸻
It usually starts small
No one wakes up and says, “our hiring process is broken”.
It creeps in.
A few more people get involved in interviews.
The brief isn’t quite as clear as it used to be.
Different opinions start pulling in different directions.
At first, it just feels like normal growth.
Then decisions start taking longer.
Feedback gets vague.
Candidates go quiet.
And suddenly something that used to feel simple feels… heavy.
⸻
The typical reaction makes it worse
Most teams try to fix it by pushing harder.
More candidates.
More recruiters.
More interviews.
Which sounds logical.
But when the process underneath isn’t working, all that does is create more noise.
Now instead of a slow process, you’ve got a slow process with more moving parts.
More opinions.
More delays.
More chances for things to stall.
⸻
Where it actually breaks
There’s usually a moment where things start to slip.
You can almost pinpoint it.
It might be:
* the role isn’t clearly defined anymore
* hiring managers aren’t aligned on what “good” looks like
* interviews aren’t consistent
* decisions take too long once you’ve found someone
Individually, none of these feel like a big deal.
Together, they slow everything down.
⸻
This is where most recruiters don’t help
The typical model is pretty simple.
You brief a recruiter.
They send candidates.
You run a process.
If it works, great.
If it doesn’t, you just… go again.
There’s no real look at what’s actually causing the slowdown.
On the other side, consultants will look at the structure, the org, the process.
But they stop there.
They don’t actually help you execute the hire.
So you end up stuck in the middle.
⸻
When it’s working, it feels different
You notice it straight away when a hiring process is set up properly.
Roles are clear before they hit the market.
Everyone’s aligned on what they’re looking for.
Interviews are structured.
Decisions happen quickly.
Good candidates don’t drop out.
They move forward.
Because the process has momentum.
And that momentum matters more than most people realise.
⸻
The part most teams miss
If hiring feels slow, it’s very rarely fixed by doing more.
It’s fixed by stepping back and asking:
“Where exactly is this getting stuck?”
Not broadly.
Specifically.
Where are decisions slowing down?
Where are candidates losing interest?
Where is the process unclear?
Once you see it, it’s usually obvious.
⸻
Final thought
Hiring shouldn’t feel like pushing something uphill.
If it does, something in the system isn’t working the way it should.
And the longer it stays that way, the more it costs you.
Not just in time, but in missed hires, lost momentum, and pressure on the team.
⸻
If you’re in the middle of this right now, I’m happy to take a look.
Usually doesn’t take long to figure out where it’s slowing down.
